The game opened with a lively start as both teams sought to go forward in attack at every possible opportunity. Crewe’s midfield duo of Peter McCabe and Sid McCrory dominated in the opening stages whilst Kempson and Heaney looked dangerous upfront for the Glenavy men.
However Mountjoy had the first real chance as they beat the Crewe offside trap but Gerrard Duff in the Crewe goal, who was outstanding throughout, managed to keep the Omagh side at bay.
Half-time: 0-0
The game continued in the same fashion from end to end until Mountjoy broke the deadlock on the hour mark as the home striker made a smart finish from the end of the penalty area. Crewe However rallied and should have equalised through the many chances they had. Kempson hit the post before finally finding the back of the net with five minutes to go and sent the tie into extra time.
Full-time: 1-1
Crewe made the perfect start to the extra time when Kempson again pounced to give Crewe a 2-1 advantage. This is how the score remained and the Crewe backline held firm as Mountjoy piled on the pressure in search of the equaliser but Crewe were not to be denied the victory that was well deserved in front of a partizan home crowd.
