Crewe Miss The ‘Point’

Crewe suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Mid Ulster League leaders Warrenpoint Town at Crewe Park on Saturday and the experience and strength of the visitors shone through

The game began badly for the Glenavy man as they conceded three early goals which made it an uphill task to salvage anything from the game. Crewe looked nervous and uncertain despite the previous weeks victory against Ballymacash.

The powerful Warrenpoint team seized on this hesitancy and fired thre goals in the first 25 minutes to leave Crewe shell shocked. To their credit though Crewe battled back and began to win more battles as the half progressed and deservedly pulled one back when Mickey Tohill, in good form recently, again finished as he slotted home for the Glenavy men.

Scotty Mulligan had a glorious opportunity jsut before half time to make it 3-2 however only a fine save from the Warrenpoint goalkeeper with his legs kept the score at 3-1 at half time.

Half time: 1-3

Crewe came out in the second half and looked the more likely to score in the opening exchanges. Conor McQuillan narrowly missed a delightful lob that landed just inches over. Warrenpoint however received the boost they needed when they went 4-1 up after Crewe keeper Duff couldnt hold a through ball.

McQullian again went close to reduce the arrears when he hit the post with another lob and Crewe did create chances to get back in the game. It was all over though when Warrenpoint hit their fifth and sixth goals respectively to give Crewe a harsh lesson as to the standards required to cope with the best teams in the league.
