Crewe United 1 Oxford United 1

Crewe took on Oxford at Crewe Park for the second week in a row. This time however was their first league encounter of the season. After winning in extra time last week against the Lurgan outfit the home side knew the tough task which lay ahead of them.

Crewe had the lions share of the play in the first half and opened the scoring after twenty minutes when Pete McCabe rifled in a shot into the top corner from twenty yards out. Shortly after Gerdy Lynas picked out a pin-point cross to Colly Teague who was unfortunate as the ball rebounded off the post.

Crewe pressed for more goals as McCrory and Lynas went close with their efforts, although the home back line was rarely troubled in the first half.

Half-time: 1-0

In the second half Oxford came out fighting and took the game to Crewe. Despite this they created no real clear cut chances. Their luck changed however fifteen minutes in as a speculative cross fired in past the unfortunate McKeown in the Crewe goal as he dived to keep it out.

The home side regrouped and should have sealed all three points when Lynas hit an air shot from six yards out with the goal at his mercy. The match ended in a draw as Crewe continue to pick up vital points in the race for third place.

Full time: 1-1

Goal: P. McCabe
