Peace Cup Announced

Posted on July 5 2011 by Thomas

Warrington Town will visit Crewe Park over the weekend of the 6th August as the Glenavy side strive to secure the Peace Cup for the first time. The Semi Professional Warrington side will spend 4 days in Northern Ireland as the clubs further cement the true friendship between the Lisburn and Warrington which have developed after the Warrington bomb in 1993

Date: 6th August
Venue: Crewe Park
Game: ‘v’ Warrington Town (Peace Cup) Kick off 3pm

In the previous two encounters Crewe have suffered heavy defeats against the semi pro’s. However a hugely depleted Crewe side held out for half an hour against Warrington last year before the superior fitness told and the inexperienced Crewe side could just not deal with the class of Warrington.

However it promises to be a much closer encounter this year and Crewe seek to produce a much improved performance and give Warrington something to think about compared with the previous encounters.

The bond between Crewe and those in Warrington was first forged as Crewe were the first cross community group to visit Warrington after the bombing in 1993 which claimed the lives of two young boys, Tim Parry and Jonathan Ball. Since then the ties have grown to such an extent that both Councils have become heavily involved, and supportive, of the efforts on both sides of the Irish Sea.

The Peace Cup was inaugurated 2 years ago and is held each year, with Crewe and Warrington Town taking it year about to host the game. It serves as a reminder and a tribute to the boys who lost their lives, and also a vision of hope that progress can continue to made in community relations.

Crewe look forward to welcoming Warrington Town and hope to give them a memorable weekend in Northern Ireland.
